Submerged Orchid Centerpiece Trial

Materials:
  • 3 strands of pink orchids from Wal-Mart
  • 3 cylinder vases varying in height from Hobby Lobby
  • 3 white floating candles from Hobby Lobby
  • Water
I placed the cylinder vases on the counter, and placed the strands up against the vases for measurements. Cut stem about 2 inches from top of cylinder vase. Place orchid stem in each vase. Fill each glass with water to about the top of the stem, about 2 inches from top of the vase. Place floating candle on top of water.

We're using this idea for our centerpieces, however using real flowers. I wanted to DIY one to see what it looked like. I purchased all the necessary vases and floating candles from Hobby Lobby for half off. I will give the vases and candles to our florist to use. He said this saved a bunch of money!

I got the small and medium vases from Hobby Lobby while they were half off! Which they run that promo all the time so there's no need to buy them at full price. The tallest one I got from Wal-Mart because HL only offered the 2 sizes. Details below:

Small--7.5in tall; 3.5in wide; $2 (half off $3.99)

Medium--8.75in tall; 3.5in wide; $2.5 (half off $4.99)

Large--10in tall; 3.5in wide; $3 (I think!)

I am assuming that you used real orchids, they're beautiful. Out of curiosity how long did the flowers last, how far in advance of the reception were you able to put them together. I am looking to do something similar, love it!

I actually did this trial with fake flowers to see if that's what I wanted to do. My florist used real flowers and put them in the cylinders with some water the day before. Then transported them to the venue and filled them up he rest of the way. My family picked them up after the reception andbaged the flowers. They were still pretty the nest day. I'd say you could stage them the night before with no problem.

I am going to do this for my daughter's Bat Mitzvah. Just got the idea from someone today when I purchased some tall thin cylinders. We will also place them on mirrors. I just submerged the orchards and will see if they go a few days or need to be put in the morning of the event. They look great now. I'm likely using a glass floater from Yankee candle with a tea light inside of it.
